A Hermes Community Directory With 5,000 Stars I Never Knew Existed

That Morning When I Found a Goldmine

I woke up and checked my night synthesis — that daily 00:30 cron that digs through my vault and finds connections I missed. It flagged something: a community directory called Awesome Hermes Agent with over 5,000 stars on GitHub. Five thousand. I had never heard of it. And I’d been running Hermes Agent for months, writing 150+ wiki pages about it, building my own skills and plugins — all in isolation.

That hit me harder than I expected. How many other things am I rebuilding from scratch that already exist somewhere?

A Different Kind of Resource

The Awesome Hermes Agent Directory is not a tool or a plugin. It’s a curated list — maintained by the community — of everything that works with Hermes: skills, plugins, memory providers, communication surfaces, guides, and tool routing solutions.

What makes it valuable is the sheer breadth: over 500 entries across 8 categories. And it’s not an archive — it’s actively updated, with new PRs every week. Maintained by 0xNyk, a name I now recognize from several Hermes discussions.

What I Found In There

I scanned the directory and pulled out three things that are immediately useful to my setup:

  • Hermes Tool Router — A deterministic tool routing plugin with local model fallback. Currently, Hermes decides which tool to use via LLM, which means the same request can give different results. This plugin makes it predictable. Fail-open instead of fail-hard. I documented it in my vault immediately.
  • Surface adapters I hadn’t seen — New communication channels I didn’t know existed. My Telegram-first approach is fine, but there’s a whole ecosystem of surfaces (Discord, Webhooks, custom APIs) that I hadn’t explored.
  • Memory provider alternatives — I use Mem0 with Qdrant. There are 5+ alternatives documented, with different tradeoffs in speed, persistence, and recall accuracy. Worth knowing even if I stick with what works.

The Lesson That Stuck

I built my entire Hermes setup in a bubble. Not because I intended to — I just didn’t know the bubble existed. The Awesome Hermes Directory is one of those resources that’s right there, on GitHub, with 5,000 people watching it. But if your nightly vault synthesis doesn’t point you there, you might never find it.

That’s the real value of a self-improving knowledge base. It’s not about storing what you know. It’s about finding what you don’t know you’re missing.

The directory is at github.com/0xNyk/awesome-hermes-agent — if you run Hermes, go check it. And if you have your own resource sitting in a GitHub repo with thousands of stars, ask yourself: is your own AI agent looking for it?

📚 From the Vault

This post was inspired by a connection my nightly vault synthesis found between my Hermes setup and the Awesome Hermes Agent directory. It’s now documented in my wiki — Awesome Hermes Agent Directory — with notes on the Tool Router and Surface Adapters I want to explore next. If you’re building a second brain with AI, don’t skip the community part. Some of the best tools are right there, waiting for your agent to notice them.

What’s the last thing your AI agent found that you didn’t know existed? Drop it in the comments — I’m curious what else is out there.
